“The Bass That Launched a Dream: Ruben Royster's Rise to Musical Director”

From Hueytown, Alabama to legendary stages like Madison Square Garden and Wembley Arena, Ruben's journey has been incredible. He has shared stages with Grammy-award winner Monica, Tamar Braxton and many more.

Sometimes People See Something In You…

Imagine the feeling an 11-year-old Ruben Royster felt receiving a real bass guitar from his kind neighbor, Mr. Dwight Duke. Mr. Duke saw something special in Ruben and offered him a deal: take this bass home, learn to play it, and it's yours. Ruben eagerly poured his heart into learning “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and Parliament’s “Flashlight”. Proudly showing Mr. Duke his newfound skills, Ruben's bass was then painted by his neighbor, adding his name in bold letters – a symbol of belief in the boy’s potential. This simple act of kindness lit a fire in Ruben’s soul, a fire that still burns bright today.

Ruben's great-grandmother, Mary B. Walker, was his guiding light, instilling in him values of hard work and perseverance. She enrolled him in piano lessons and the school band, reminding him, “an idle mind is a devil's workshop.” These values shaped Ruben's character and are ones he now passes on to his own children.

When Preparation Meets Opportunity

Ruben's success isn't solely based on passion and talent; his Master's degree sets him apart. “A degree gives you options,” he explains, envisioning a future teaching at an HBCU. He currently guides over 7,500 young people on their own creative journeys as Director of Arts and Innovation for the Boys and Girls Club in metro Atlanta. He sees himself in those eager faces, remembers the kindness that set him on his path, and strives to be that guiding force for the next generation.

His education gives him an edge in the often-challenging music industry that is filled with competition, negativity, and the constant struggle for fair recognition.

This dedication to education reflects Ruben's unwavering faith and his mantra: “What is for me, is for me, and what God has for me is for me.” This belief anchors him, reminding him of his unique journey.

A Pivotal Moment

One moment stands out in Ruben’s memory, a turning point that changed the course of his career. A “no call, no show” from a bass player created a sudden opportunity for Ruben to perform with Monica at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in late 2018. With just a day to prepare, Ruben flew to New York, stepped on that stage and seized the moment.

That performance led him to become Monica’s Musical Director, a role extending beyond playing bass. “The Musical Director guides the show musically,” Ruben explains. “Choosing songs, arranging parts, ensuring the artist and band are in sync—it's all about coordination.”

The demanding role requires strong leadership and organizational skills. “Music Direction is about coordinating everything,” Ruben says, “from rehearsals and schedules to the right equipment,” ensuring a captivating performance.

Currently, he's the Music Director and Bassist for Monica Denise Productions, Tamar Braxton Productions, and Gritz & Jelly Butter, LLC, showcasing his incredible skills and versatility.

“Star-Studded” Experiences

A key partnership in Ruben’s journey has been with Shawnette Sapp and Pink Sapphire Events. “I’m loyal to Shawnette because Shawnette has always been loyal to me as a music vendor," Ruben recalls warmly. “Shawnette is amazing at what she does. Her events are always top-notch and stellar. So, when she calls me, I have to deliver a certain level of excellence to maintain the integrity of her events.” He adds, “It’s been a good working partnership of at least 10 years, if not more.” This synergy attributes to Ruben's commitment to ensuring Pink Sapphire Event attendees receive a star-studded experience. What makes it 'star-studded', you ask?

“A 'star-studded experience’ is exciting and alluring,” he explains. “It feels exclusive and features high-achievers from all industries.” He envisions an event with “impactful people for networking,” creating a unique atmosphere. “It's an experience you can't get anywhere else.”
